At storytelling with data (SWD), we believe graphs and data are powerful tools to uncover patterns, solve problems, and make sense of the world—just like detectives! With Daphne Draws Data, bestselling author Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic’s dynamic children’s book, we invite you to help us inspire the next generation of data-minded thinkers while strengthening your own data communication skills.
The Data Detectives Program invites individuals and teams who are passionate about giving back to the community and developing a future talent pipeline for their organizations to facilitate a 30-45 min interactive graphing program to kids aged 5-10. We provide all materials and training, making it simple and fun for you to deliver!
Steps to leading your Data Detectives mission:
1. Apply to become a Data Detective Leader
We welcome passionate STEM professionals and teams, employee resource groups, and data enthusiasts who are ready to share the power of drawing data with kids in their area
2. Receive your training kit
After applying, you’ll be invited to attend a live training session with with Kaitlin Henze, Education and Outreach Specialist. You’ll then receive access to a resource hub with everything you need including a:
Step by step program guide and event prep checklist
customizable slide deck and graphing activities
Video demos of live programs
Sample verbiage to use when coordinating your program
3. Plan your program
Coordinate with a local school, library, or youth program and schedule your 30-40 min Daphne program. We are happy to provide ideas of places that will enjoy the program
4. Lead your program
Read Daphne Draws Data aloud, guide a simple graphing activity, and help kids spot patterns in their own data. The session is designed to be fun, interactive, and curiosity-driven, helping students build confidence in data storytelling while making learning how to graph engaging and inspiring for your group of kids.
5. Share & celebrate
Post photos (with permission) and a quick review to earn complimentary access to take a storytelling with data on-demand course.
